Recent research finds that two versions of J. S. Bach's The Art of Fugue exist; the earlier manuscript of 14 pieces dates no later than 1742 and puts the works in a somewhat different order than the later version which Bach was attempting to complete when he died in 1750. Organist Mathias Maierhofer, winner of many prizes at organ playing competitions and successor to Gerre Hancock as chair of the organ and church music department at the University of Austin, Texas, was appointed in 2016 as chair of organ music at the University of Music, Freiburg, Germany, and cathedral organist.
