Freiburg Cathedral: Swallow's Nest Organ (one of 4 organs) - [ACD-1104] $0.00

Matthias Maierhofer, cathedral organist, plays music composed in the 17th-century "fantastic" style (in stylo phantastico) on the the "swallow's nest" organ located high on the north wall of the Freiburg Cathedral nave, where an organ has been located since the 1400s. In 1545, a new organ and case was built in the swallow's nest gallery by Jörg Ebert of Ravensburg, but it was replaced in 1870, 1929, and 1936. Marcussen of Denmark built a new organ, op. 743, in 1965, incorporating some few remaining parts of the previous organ and what remained of the 1545 Ebert case, replicating the rest of it. The organ has 21 stops, 37 ranks, on two manuals and Pedal, and retains its original (exquisite) voicing. The organ has mechanical key action with its own keydesk; as well, it is playable via electric action with all four organs in the cathedral from a single, large console. The CD booklet is in English and German, with stoplists, photos, and interesting essays.
