Sonata No. 20 in F Zur Friedensfeier, Op. 196

Reviews The Diapason, ". . . In the notes, Stevens comments on Rheinberger's concern for 'compact, logical structures, for noble melodies, for polyphony, especially fugues, and for forthright harmonic language . . .' which is served well by Stevens's own playing style. . . . the 1913 Wirsching organ in the spacious acoustic of Queen of All Saints Church in Brooklyn, New York, gives every indication of being a particularly attractive instrument. Stevens uses the 1889 Odell at Corpus Christi Church in Baltimore for the F Major Sonata. The organ seems to well match the sonata: admirable and well crafted . . . . The B major "Fantasie-Sonata" . . . opening brims with musical ideas, weighing-in as the longest movement heard on this disc; a march-like theme reappears in the final fugue. The Intermezzo, a theme and variations movement, allows Stevens to use many of the registers of the organ, the 1860 Hook at First Congregational Church in Woburn, Massachusetts. . . . I look forward to Bruce Stevens finishing the project he has started and maintained in such style."

Reviews The American Record Guide, "With his performance of the 16th Sonata in G-sharp minor, Bruce Stevens exceeds his already admirable efforts on behalf of Rheinberger's organ sonatas. His is an inspiring performance of the cahllenging work . . . Stevens in scrupulous in oabserving details of phrasing, registration, and tempo, basing his performances on the original editions  . . . He is obviously a serious scholar and a formidable musician who plays this music with vitality, imagination, and devotion. Three historic American organs sound magnificent . . ."
