Twenty-one Organ Chorales (not those discovered at Yale a few years
ago, nor the "Rudorff" collection) attributed to J. S. Bach, including his only known work for
trumpet and organ, are recorded here for the very first time ever!
Playing are Stephen Rapp and trumpeter Douglas Myers, who also prepared
the edition promised to be published. The organ is the beautiful Schnitger-style instrument
built in 1995 by Richards, Fowkes & Co. for St. John’s Lutheran
Church, Stamford, Connecticut. These works have been listed in the Bach
Werke Verzeichnis since 1950 yet they have not been published or
recorded before. Because the only sources cannot be authenticated,
these works almost certainly by J. S. Bach have remained obscure. Also
recorded are a Canon in the same authentication category as the
Chorales, seven variations of the Sarabanda con Partite BWV 990, and
the fully authenticated Prelude & Fugue in C BWV 531.
