Until now, little was known about the late organ works of the Romantic-era composer Hans Fährmann (1860–1940). Among his most significant compositions is the cycle Bilder deutscher Dome (Images of German Cathedrals), Op. 76, created between 1922 and 1924. These are large-scale musical fantasies that place extreme demands on both the performer’s technical skill and interpretive ability. Even during his lifetime, Fährmann’s works were notorious for their difficulty—a fact that did little to help their commercial success. Consequently, only the first piece in the cycle, the Ulm Minster Fantasy, was ever published (in 1937). The remaining movements — Cologne Cathedral, Regensburg Cathedral, and Erfurt Cathedral — remained as manuscripts within the composer’s estate, where they were rediscovered by Andreas Jetter in the summer of 2025.

Another work from his legacy is the unpublished Sonata No. 14, featuring a Fuga transcendentale, Op. 79. Its manuscript was also found in the composer’s estate and has now been recorded for the first time by Andreas Jetter. As Fährmann’s final organ sonata, it represents the pinnacle of a body of work that, over the course of decades, expanded the genre of the Romantic organ sonata. In terms of harmony and composition, the piece pushes beyond the boundaries of what had been achieved up to that point, while its technical requirements frequently stretch to the very limits of what is playable.

For these premiere recordings, Andreas Jetter utilizes the grand Romantic Schuster organ (1929) at St. John’s Church (Johanniskirche) in Zittau—an instrument that also incorporates valuable pipework from its 19th-century predecessor, built by the firm Jehmlich. Particularly striking is the open 32-foot Principal in the organ case; its massive pipes not only define the space visually but also provide a sonic foundation of extraordinary depth and presence. Following a meticulous restoration in 2013 by the organ-building firm Jehmlich, the St. John’s organ in Zittau once again resonates as an impressive testament to the art of Saxon organ building.
