Jan Hennig, one of the world's few professional harmoniumists, received the German Record Critics' Prize in 2012 for this CD exploring music composed specifically for the European art harmonium, which was brought to the peak of its perfection by the firm of Victor Mustel of Paris. The two Mustel instruments used in this recording date from 1901-03 and also incorporate a celesta (tuned metal bars struck by a hammer). Unlike American reed organs, the European harmonium was standardized in its tonal attributes, compass, and keyboard dividing point before 1850, thus encouraging serious composers to write for it. Hennig's extensive notes explain the progression of the harmonium's evolution (with examples in the repertoire on the CD) from its very early emergence as an award-winning invention of a Copenhagen physiologist ca. 1790 through its standardization and the inclusion of refinements and options including "percussion" invented in 1841 to speed the speech of the free reeds, double-expression, the Harpe éolinne 2', the Baryton 32', Forte-Expressif, tremulating stops, the celesta (tuning forks or tuned metal bars), two keyboards (1875), Prolongement, Métaphone to dull the tone of certain stops, and many others.
